I should probably play this, but I didn't play the first Galaxy and I'm really worried I'll get lost in the rich narrative that Mario games are known for.

I try to do the same thing, mostly just so I don't get too distracted with another game and give up on the first. It's mostly with story-driven games though.
Seems like a hard thing to determine. I'm all for surprise, but you gotta be able to market the game so people will buy it in the first place.
