I totally understand your argument, but one thing people fail to realize about Indiana Jones is that every movie had some strange twist that was unexplainable. Be it biblical(Raiders, Last Crusade) or magic(Temple of Doom). My point is you can't satisfy everybody all the time. But like you said if it's presented well people can at least stomach the twist.
