It's also free to play online with PC's, and they are are an open platform. They are completely different.
The popularity of 3rd party games have already blurred the lines between consoles - with only exclusives being the differentiator.

The problem I see is mediocre games would get an increase in online traffic due to crossplay.
If a game is a dud, let it go the way of the Dodo. The cream will rise to the top so to speak. If a game is good it would get a decent community if not straight away, then over time.
CrossPlay is definitely not needed, and should not be shoehorned into games.
