Why are linear environments a negative thing? books and movies are as linear as you get but people are immersed into them more so than anything...in order to tell a truly emotional story the player must be told it without control. example: if you have a choice between character a dying or character b dying that means that both characters are ultimately meaningless because they are not essential to the test of the plot..if the player wanted to he could easily reset the game and chose a differ...

Everything you listed can be applied to any rpg not only japanese. Western rpgs are generic as the next one, you just don't notice it yet.
Games like eternal sonata where the whole game takes place in Frederick Chopin's final dreams as he lays on his death bed or Lost Odyssey that tells the story of a group of immortals greatest journey as well as their past ventures. Or Neir that shows how far a man will go to save his daughters life or Ninokuni where its about a boy...
I play role playing games to be told a fantastic story and be taken on an adventure the same way a novel would or a great film would...I see games like Skyrim more as adventure games.
I personally hate multiple endings...or having to jump through hoops for the tell the prefect or true endings. Just give me new game plus and side quests for more detail into the story and I'm good to go.
i worked there for over a year and never once did i feel my job to be in jeopardy and I never tried to pursue GI subs or pre-orders, sure I would ask but wouldn't pursue it past once...although if i saw the same guy in the store A LOT and noticed he didn't have an EDGE card (at the time) I would say "hey dude you need to get an EDGE card because by now you could have saved what it costs" no different than what I would tell my friends or family.

There is no commission at gamestop...did it ever occur to you that maybe you are dealing with assholes? There are a lot them and some happen to work at gamestop locations ...some work at best buy, some work at mom and pop stores too ...in fact mom and pop stores customer service usually suck because there is no structure....of course this isn't skyways true...just like most things in this world.
To be fair, if you are a frequent game stop customer and you DON'T have the power up card you are a fool.
Final fantasy X was sad but strangely fulfilling because you knew it was the only logical way to end without bending the rules.

If gears of war our dead island delivered even half of the emotional impact their trailers did I would have actually been interested.
The wii has better exclusives than the 360....other than that I would say the 360 and PS3 multiform experience is even...some games run better and look better on one or the other...the blu ray also gives the PS3 plus because less discs are better.

Why would people accept taking a step back in quality when it had taken decades to get it where it is today....music and movies going into the "jack of all trades" devices make sense because they did not sacrifice the core experience...the same cannot be said about gaming.

I played those games and loved them but I don't want to play a rip off of them....XIII was new and original...with a lot of haters...if it wasn't a FF game no one would hate on it so much....that's what happens when a series doesn't make the same game over and over again it takes risks and sometimes they pay off and sometimes they don't...in XIII's case, to most people, it was a big disappointment...to others it was a fun...
XIII-2 is very good....no need to hold a grudge....this entire industry revolves around money including Level-5...although I am very excited for nino kuni.
X-2 did not have a larger install base, XIII-2 its multi platform.
Type-0 has little to do with XIII...a game many people did not like, this tells me that people did not like the world if XIII but still like Final Fantasy in general.
