MS gets money from selling Windows licenses. So if someones buys a PC. $$$$$
MS makes money for licensing for things like DirectX to developers too. So every game that uses DirectX $$$$$
And so on and so on.
MS and Steam partnership is coming soon.
MS wants to have a console market and pc gaming market. Why should they be fractured?
A large majority of console gamers don't play games on pc. And pc gamers rarely play games on consoles.
MS makes money either way.

A publicly owned company can be bought by another company and any given time. They just need to purchase a majority share of their stocks. That gives them controlling interest in the company.
