There really has been no other game in history that has generated so much fear in owners of other consoles than Killzone 2.
You had a console that was almost entirely based off a single game, the Xbox and Halo. There's only so far you can go handing out 10/10s and flooding the gaming media with stories about Halo. You have to trash FPS games on other consoles so the 10/10s for Halo to actually stand out.

Not only is the PS3 the obvious best value if you just look at what you get for what you pay, it has been since it launched at 500 and 600 dollars.

I don't think anyone suggested that all Sega fans became Microsoft fans.
But a fairly large chunk of the hardcore Dreamcast fans did immediately latch onto the Xbox. But there was also a large number of PC gamers who jumped on the Xbox because it was a Microsoft product, a large percentage of the games were just PC ports, and was effectively just a low end PC in a big black box.

Even if you put aside the fact that Microsoft continues to be the only company that lies about actual sales to customer numbers by using shipped to retail store numbers, the actual sales of multiplatform games and revenue generated from each console in the US as reported by all the major publishers shows the PS3 and 360 are roughly equal. And in some cases like EA, the PS3 is leading.
So, one or all of these must be true:
