To back to the top of the thread and ready UXO and/or ElementX's explanation as to why this happens. They throughly explain why the screen is dark on the sides. Also remember, BIOSHOCKS problem was base on the height of the screen in single view not the aspect ratio in split screen. Two totally different monsters.
You are absolutely correct, splitting the screen horizontally with shortening the width would distort the 16x9 aspect ratio.

What target was halo trying to hit. Bungie never released and CG trailer and lied that it was the actual game. And then had to delay the game, completely revamp it just to save face. HALO didn't hit its target is because it never set one. Bank on that!

I think if you got to metacritic.com and look at the combined average for a game. If it rates a 94 or better, then it should be considered a AAA title, 91-93 = AA and 89-90 = A.
Because this would be a sampling of the majority of all reviews.
