Skyrim doesn't excel at anything (save exploration). There is no way Skyrim is "Game Of The Generation".
What was fun about Skyrim? Walking around, seeing what's in that cave, etc. But the combat, quests (save a few), and character customization were all standard and unremarkable.
There are many games last generation that did what Skyrim did, but did them better. A couple of examples that pop into my head, they're both RPGs.
Gears of War 3 is the best online shooter on 360 and is one of the best online games in the last few years.
