Correction to my above post HD VMD is NOT combatable with HD DVD. However CH DVD is which is a chinese format backed by the chinese government... sorry. I jumped the gun there. But my point stands optical disk players down the road will play all formats.
china is huge, it will take off over there for sure... here is what will happen. i can almost guarantee.
this format will dominate china because its cheap. there will be cheap blu-ray drives produced in china and sold around the world that also support hd vmd. pirates in china will rip blu-ray releases and dump them on to HD VMD disks and sell them on the black market the world over. this is how this format will grow and thrive.
and dont say blu-ray can't be ripp...
while i agree, you must remember all three of these formats are in their infancy... none of them have any real sales numbers when compared to DVD... so it might not be too late, specifically since china is so damn big. its a long shot yes but not impossible.
as a side note, this third format is combatable with HD DVD thus proving my point as i've said in other posts five years from now you will be able to put HD DVD's into a common hd optical disk drive and it will play... $50 ...

thx for the link, however you do realize then for the $400 model they make $0 off each system i.e. no pofit, if they drop the price $100 they will then be losing $100 per system thus back where they started almost... remember to get where they are now they had to cut out features... so no it really isn't that easy for them to drop the price.

do you realize a decade ago 99% of the few poeple that had internet had dial-up. do you realize a decade ago most CD burners cost about $300 and to download 1 song it took a couple hours... I think you fail to see how fast the tech world moves. first off DLC islaready here as a viable option, I'll look for the source but more movies have been purchased and watched via DLC than on HD DVD and Blu-ray combined.
DLC is already here, and by the time DVD is dead it will be the best option. I think everyone forgets that DVD is still king by a BIG BIG BIG margin it's going to be quite some time before that changes and by then DLC will be even more attractive. All Blu-Ray can do is get old now, DLC can evolve. Sure you could go out and buy a disc to watch your movies just like you can go out and buy a cd still.... but its not gonna be what most people do. And many people that go out and buy cd's do so sim...
