VGC usually overestimates Nintendo and MS numbers, and underestimates Sony. Their regular corrections/adjustments are almost always "MS down, Nintendo down, Sony up".
That's not gonna happen. Nintendo makes good money being a kids company. They're not going to shed that skin and become MS or Sony.
MS has the most to prove. They need to SHOW us some reassurance that Kinect is the shiznit they are touting it to be, and prove that they are continuing to support their more hardcore audience as well.
Nintendo just needs to bust out some sweet 3DS titles and they're good, although a Wii 2 announcement would be big (although not really earthshaking, if its not more powerful than the PS3). A Wii 2 that is still sub-360, in terms of power, will just be "meh". ...
Compare games to other forms of entertainment -- movies, sports events, theatre, etc.
How many hours of enjoyment do you get out of each, and how much do they cost? Do the math, and you'll realize that games are unbelievably cheap, even at release.
Developers and publishers go out of business left and right trying to keep them that way. The whole "games are too expensive" mindset needs to change before games can reach new heights, IMO. Great ...
The 3DS' lack of sales have nothing to do with the NGP. They have everything to do with the 3DS itself.
The new cam is actually decent, IMO. I don't feel so constrained, like before.

I hate the say it, but I honestly think S1 and S2 only sold as much as they did because they were the only online shooter option on the PS2, at the time.
I agree that I don't think it'll pass the 2M mark, but its not because it doesn't deserve it, IMO. I honestly expect to see all the old game modes and loads of old and new maps via DLC for this one. It'll cost some, but I think that SOCOM 4 will probably become the "SOCOM ...
The game will probably sell better than a niche title would have, wolfam1. Hate it as much as you want, but SOCOM was dead without some draw to the casuals. The fact that its not breaking records like CoD is immaterial -- at least SOCOM is alive and kicking, and has a chance for revival.

I would actually say that Zipper has made more technological progression for Sony than most of its other studios combined.
The other studios excel at presentation, but none of them have pulled off technical marvels like MAG, with its insane player count and fantastic networking. If they get the high-end presentation going at Zipper, they'd be a serious contender for top dog in the shooter genre.
The community is pretty watered down these days. Many people who jumped ship long ago, and now play CoD might come back though, who knows.
Actually, the scores that this game is getting is right in line with what the mainstream media gave previous SOCOMs.
The first couple only scored higher because they had an, at the time, unique feature -- online play.

If the PS3 had the 360's GPU, it would be a monster, and be a good half-gen ahead of the 360, and probably a more powerful gaming platform than any gaming PC through the end of 2008.
I'd say the same about the 360, if it had the PS3's CPU, but... the slower memory architecture and some other issues kinda get in the way of fully utilizing a Cell in a system like the 360.
