I think they are better on the new gen consoles. I was able to pick up Season 1 and 400 for $7.50 during a sale and then Season 2 launched. I finished the 1st.
I think it runs better and I don't see some of the same bugs as I did on last gen.

As a Dragon (Warrior) Quest fan, I have never encountered a game in the series that wasn't fun from the getgo. And talk about "grinding," DQ games are known for it.
Another good game (though last gen) that does most of what you talk about well is Ni No Kuni.
Of course it is a Level 5/ Studio Ghibli game, so it stands to reason that it is good (yes I am biased)...
Simple answer: Buy a PS4 and enjoy it now. Then buy the PSVR next year and enjoy it even more.
