The PS Vita is effectively Dead in North America. NPD sales have it selling around 15K month in its 3rd year on the market.
Sony isn't making a ton of games for it either. And software just doesn't sell. The Vita has had zero games in the top 10 NPD since it launched. The highest selling Vita game is Uncharted Golden Abyss with about 1-1.5 million.
The system just doesn't sell enough units of software. However, the Vita is alive in Japan. System...

They've basically abandoned the Vita. Shuhei Yoshida said they are scaling back PS Vita games development. Then Shuhei said they are focusing on the PS4 at TGS. At E3 and at Gamescom there were no big games for Vita announced. And multiple Sony executives have said they are focusing on PS4.

If you're giving the game away for free on PS Plus, Sony isn't really making any money off it.... that's my whole point. Software sales on PS Vita are bad.... If you combine Pokemon X & Y, Animal Crossing New Leaf, Monster Hunter 4,Super Mario 3D Land, and Mario Kart 7 on 3DS....that's pretty much outsold all of the Vita's retail software combined.
Sony messed up with the Vita and they know it. No backwards compatibility with the PSP was not a good id...
