I agree that this looks like a techie job or a hack. Why would MS add a relatively unsupported AV input in their new system and risk alienating early-adopters? They aren't sony!
I think that the HD-DVD add on will create the HDMI support people are looking at, with a cable or HDMI out from the hd-dvd.

its going very well- MS have been in contact with me all weekend, they have offered a 50% discount on the repair, taking it to $65, and they are getting a supervisiors manager to call me today to discuss a free repair or replacement.
&&yes, i have a feeling these stories will pale in comparision to what people buying a $600+ system that breaks will say/act like.

chatted to a tech guy, emailed a tech guy and called the MS tech guy again. the supervisor was a di(khead to me, i am really starting to dislike MS. Though after he told me it was my fault, and that there were no other supervisors above him, he offered to knock $29 off my repair bill. So I say, "you want 1/4 of my console price to replace a deficent drive you sold me, 5 months after use?"

I think a 3rd, more expensive Super premium would upset a lot of people, not sell well and would look like MS were scared of PS3's HDMI tech. PR and promotions would have a big problem with this. and 3 SKUs...
I really think a cable or adaptor from the HD-DVD add-on is MS's solution to this...
