I got my PlayStation just like you. in 97 after realizing my Sega Saturn was getting its ass kicked. I was 23 at the time.
If they are planning to do that, it would explain why they're not announcing it yet. The longer they wait the harder it will be for MS to respond.
I'm betting it will be $499 for the disk based version though.
MSRP is manufacturers suggested retail price. So yeah... They're pretty much the same thing.

You can still buy a standard Blu-Ray drive, Fishy. And... For a good UHD drive you will spend over $100. You can find off brand external UHD drives in the $60 range. I'm not trying to argue, just letting you know where I'm coming from.
