the firmware mess-up from 2.40 was from people updating from incomplete downloads. If you are really worried about it, update your PS3 with a flash drive.
Most of your concerns will be gone when Home drops.
The Atari Lynx blew the GameBoy and Game Gear out of the water, but only had a handful of games. Some of those games were great though. I loved my Lynx. It ate batteries for breakfast too.

There's no PAL and NTSC at HD resolutions (720 on up). The difference is probably with all the localized languages.

They're transparent when loading in.
Bikes can wreck, but the human disappears. Sometimes the screen simply goes to black if you run directly into a wall and resets your bike.
They handle really well though, and that's what I care about.
Should be in your junkyard. If not, it didn't download correctly. Also, the title screen should have a bike on it instead of a car.
Playstation Store has a title screen now when you access it. There's also new icons in the top left for your cart and such.
