I could have seen the game go from Raiden's transformation from MGS2 to MGS4, in that after acquiring the HF blade he has to learn how to use it and so on, therefore the pacing could be slower as he learns more about being ninja and all that, until MGS4 or just before MGS4 where he is completely pro at what he does and goes 'over the top' then the pacing can be crazy 'revengeance' style.
