To be honest Unisoft is the real reason their sales aren't better on PC. Anyone who has bought a game through Uplay knows just how terrible it is compared to Steam or Origin but you're forced to use it.
I remember on numerous occasions buying games and not being able to play them for days because Uplay just wouldn't work.
Until they put more work into the platform it's not going to change.

Marketing... Which sounds better? A portable that you can plug into your tv, or a home console that you can play on the go. Think about which narrative you'd go with when marketing a new system.

I still think the biggest surprise is seeing just how much of a juggernaut Splatoon has become in Japan. Still high up on the charts despite being nearly a year old. Never expected this when the game was first revealed at E3.
It's not a bad system, but its major problem is that there isn't a single "must own" title. It failed to get that killer app that all systems need to survive. To give an example the Switch has BotW, Mario: Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon 2. These 4 games are probably the biggest driver of sales so far and the main reason the Vita struggled is that it never received a game of this calibre to push the hardware.
