It's really worth investing time to perfect the settings to how you like them, don't write this game off because the default setting may not be to your liking! :P
Yeah wheels are pretty expensive alright, as long as you have the money/space/permission from wife/girlfriend/mum etc :)

It's a trade off between graphical quality and sheer scale of the map. Ivory Tower focused their attention on having the biggest game rather then the best looking.
Hopefully in the not too distant future, we'll be able to have scale and graphics as developers squeeze more and more from the consoles.
It's quite unbelievable really.
