Agreed on the keyboard and mouse part. I play with a HOTAS I bought on Amazon for $30 and it made a HUGE difference.
The Horizons DLC adds ground vehicle combat and base raiding. The core game still has exploration, faction combat, pirating, and ship collecting. Not sure how much has changed since the beta. I didn't play it until well into 2015. No release date on Horizons for the X1.

I haven't purchased much DLC. The best I can think of is "The Ballad of Gay Tony". It made GTA IV much better and it was a lot of content for the price.

I second this. It seems like a stupid thing to try. Then you play for a few hours with your friends and realize how enjoyable it is.
