who said that? the devs and the pros-xbox (so they have a reason to say gt5 is not that good, etc.). Nothing can compete with GT5, ever. The devs team is too good and skilled, they have alot of experience and it takes a while to make a gran turismo.

normally you can play the game with your US account after downloaded from EU account. So i guess you can play with US accounts-friends.
