No, Sony are one of the founding members of Blu-Ray, they hold a lot of the patents for it.
A typical movie on a BD is about 18 to 25gb, that typically has the movie itself and a uncompressed DTS HD or True HD 5.1/7.1 soundtrack, plus you get the extra bonus content to boot.
A movie on a streaming service is about 7gb with a compressed DTS/Dolby Prologic 5.1 soundtrack.
Streaming services are not just there yet, thats why people still buy on discs.

Wrong, hd-dvd's were never better, sure they were easier to produce but a single layer disc could only hold 15gb of information while a single layer BD holds 25gb.

I do have some history with them, my 360 went faulty with-in 6 months of me buying it, short story is they could not repair it, so the tw@t5 at the service centre tried to fob me off with a refurbished 360 instead of a new one which by law I am entitled to under the warranty.
Currenty Trading Standards in the UK are dealing with it.

I think it is to late to get a PS4 for launch via pre-order, Sony did state anything after Aug 6th could not be guaranteed for launch.
Best chance they have is to queue up in line, but warn them to get there about 4 hours early lol.
Well of course they do, that is business, but i would rather spend my hard earned money with a company like Sony who offer a better buying experience, a better, warmer customer service experience.

Thats because Mantle has no need for DX, MS have invested a bucket load of money into DX research, dont see them dropping it sometime soon.
Saying that, I did hear somewhere that this particular DX was going to be there last.....
Pandamobile is correct in what he says, Windows 8 and the X1UI may come from the same stable, but they are completely different beasts.
The X1 uses a low level API that utilises DX very heavily, MS has stated this many times.
Mantle is a completely different kettle of fish, as at it's core the API is has no need for DX.
AMD are working with MS to implement the use of DX within there games for PC.

To be honest, I dont think consoles have any use for Mantle as such, both consoles come with there own low level API's anyway, this is geared towards PC's being more efficient processing the GPU's power, which we all know DX does not do to well.
No it's not, MS have nothing to do with it. Mantle is being developed by AMD and EA, more specifically Dice.
If anything, the new API is more related to PS4's GNM API.

There is another issue however, I know MS has stated the X1 is energy efficient but it is still using some energy. As you correctly state, the x1 has to be on all the time to watch tv(in your case 16 hours), would it not be more energy efficient to bypass the x1and go straight into your tv or amp and turn the x1 off?

Your first point is mute, Sony has a team of specialists called ICE that aid developers in designing and using dev tools, these guys have been around since the early PS3 days, they worked closely with ND and you know where that lead.
