This is sonys market to lose now, momentum will only shift if they screw it up. The ps3/360 era was a 'fool me once' scenario that won't happen again as microsoft has shown just how shallow the xbox division really is both with the 360 and the X1. Only way it will be different next gen is of sony makes some really stupid decisions.

Exclusives are the primary reason, but for casuals who play mostly multiplats or mostly online they would be more inclined to purchase the console their friends play. Not allowing cross play eliminates xbox as the ideal option for this crowd as ps4 holds the high market share. If it were as 'no big deal' as you imply then cross play wouldn't be the issue it's becoming.

What SSM was able to accomplish with this game is incredible. Completely changing up the dynamics of the game while continuing the existing story and not rebooting it. Another finger to anyone who says single player is dying.
Not really, reviews are getting more and more biased and unreliable. Throw out the title GTA or Zelda and it's an automatic 95+ meta but genuinely great games with almost zero valid criticism can't seem to break mid to low 80s.
