Sony reports units sitting in a warehouse as sold to retailers. IF you have some sort of proof that they do not I'd like to see it. It's common knowledge that is how Sony reports their numbers.

Oh lets not forget the jailbreak stuff. That probably got a few million PS3 owners banned. NOw they'll need new consoles. When GT5 comes out that boost wont be from GT5, it will be from a made number of people that might not exist buying those banned consoles over.
Too bad all those Slim PS3 models do not count. They must be purchases from previous PS3 owners because the attach rate is dropping and games like 3D dot heroes are only selling 300k or less. Modnation only got 500k. If these games were on xbox fanboys would be quoting the numbers now as proof. Give them the same proof for their own console and suddenly their opinion changes.
