1. Launch was bad. Too expensive and too late compared to Xbox 360s launch, and exclusives were low until about 2008-2009.
2. Wii gained the casual market. Which is the bigger fan-base.
3. Xbox had a better online service (granted, you still had to pay for online and you still got ads)

I just looked at the sales from that generation and omg. I'm laughing my ass off. 150 million units sold for ps2 and a little over 20 million for both the GameCube and Xbox. That's more than fucking annihilation. That's like, hardcore ass rape with no lube.
