There’s a good article somewhere on the net showing some of the dev designer documents for this game. The level of detail they put into creating fish, coral, rocks etc was pretty amazing for its time.
Its a classic game that never gets old for. But seriously to hell with Welcome to the machine. That level and the one before it suck.

Yeah the combat is the one thing holding me back from diving into this again. Everything is really good. But having to go into the same areas over and over and kill the same dudes all for the sake of the way the game is designed and how different endings are unlocked. Meh...

PS1 era and earlier is ok for the remake treatment. I agree there’s too many being done now. Reboots would be better.
No it wouldn't defeat the games design. The only user based caveat is that it ruins your run or flow whilst in a run. But an optional mid run save should be mandatory for these games.
The problem for developers is the headache to make it work, due to having to save the level design and the position of the player, nearby enemies etc.
