Up vote, Great question. It makes more sense for Microsoft and Nintendo to push this in their position, they're install base is smaller.
Gamers want to game with their friends, if more of their friends game on one platform they will go to that platform. If the games offer cross platform multiplayer that argument doesn't exist anymore.
As it is the status quo solidifies Sonys dominance, to change that gives Nintendo and Microsoft an opportunity to regain market share....

I resent being told I need to learn a lesson about diversity 24/7 as it is, i don't need it in my games too. I don't go out of my way to be an asshole to anybody, and thats independent of race, color, religious creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, age or disability.
