It is still basically an optional service, so if you don't care about it don't subscribe to it.

Not everyone likes GameStop, or will even shop there.
I doubt that any company would ignore consoles even with a service like Steam.

Yeah, it sucks especially when you have to hit like 3 or 4 different stores to find what you want if you are lucky that is.
More than just that, though that is the biggest reason.
So very many reasons why they can't make a turn around.
I love physical gaming but even I can see the writing on the wall that digital gaming will probably take over it is only a matter of time. Especially way the industry is going and technology as well.
Besides the physical side of gaming while awesome they need to go away from disc based gaming and into another format that will be much better than that.
The first reason is about the only one that I think is stupid, games are not expensive. Rather cheap for the amount of time you will end up using when playing it really. Though that also depends where in the world you live and stuff.
If digital only comes about they will go away.

It is always a nice option to have but it isn't always a viable option for various reasons.
