I read the full interview on PSblog and he was laughing and obviously enjoying the interview in a light hearted tone. So obviously he just means you shouldn't rely on shields.

IMO the author could have done a lot better than just give a few best known titles which is about useless and should give a more comprehensive list to make the article worthwhile.

I think too often I see references to harcore vs casual gamers while the majority are in between and more or less casual at times depending on personal changing lives IMO
Also I think Bloodborne will be more popular and interest more gamers than the previous fromSoftware games in part because of marketing and media coverage.
