What that means for Balmer is that he will get a smaller cut of the dividends which is deducted from gross profit after a retained earnings report is made. I think he is hiding some inside information from the public since he has willfully prevented himself from profiting in MS's latest products.
In accounting it does count as sold units. Sony sold 2.5 million to retailers. Now it's up to the retailers to sell them to customers. Retailers wouldn't have bought so much if it was an item that will sit there for a while. So far, I've seen little available units on shelves so I'm guessing they are selling just fine.
