I have a great PC but I'm not interested in another generic shooter with bad story, script and voice acting (plus myriads of bugs) - I found the first one average and didn't bother with Crysis Warhead. I'd much rather play some old PS2 games that I missed out like Persona 3, SotC, Okami - deep masterpieces with great story telling and unique art direction.
And of course this is just the PR talk like many times before - they have little experience with PS3 hardware and as 3rd part...
that's not very probable - it will take ages to understand how GameOS work - reading assembler code is not much fun and if by some miracle they manage to digitally sign their own version of GameOS or circumvent it you'd still need the FPGA board Geohot and others are using, good soldering skills and a fat PS3.
Tres desole... labwarrior, I don't see a good reason to own an xbox - all the alleged xbox exclusives I care for are on PC with better graphics, faster loading times and cheaper.
This only shows how important is was to remove the OtherOS - they only managed to dump GameOS through OtherOS.
Anyway, not very useless so far and still far away from custom firmware and the ability to play backup games. Being able to disassemble the standard GameOS is something totally different than replacing it with your own - in order to use your own version of GameOS you'd have to digitally sign it. Plus you still need the hardware hack (FPGA board) + otherOS.
Persona 4, Ico and Flower come to my mind.
I often used the PS3 browser to check N4G and other sites before and after playing a game. Now I will go to another room, turn on my core 2 quad/nvidia 495gtx PC with 850W power supply unit only to browse a few sites for 10 minutes.... thanks for opening my eyes :-D

"Geoff Levand, PS3-Linux maintainer" is not Sony employee, so Sony didn't lie. AFAIK Sony has nothing to do with the Linux distros you can install on fat PS3s, those are just regular Linux distros compiled for the Power PC CPUs; it really is "other OS" - it could be Free BSD or your own OS if you managed to compile it for the Power PC architecture.

And exactly how will this update prevent them from continuing using the PS3s for that purpose? Do universities need their PS3s updated to the latest FW if they don't play games in the GameOS and don't use PSN?
Even if WKC averaged 100% how would it be relevant for you as you don't own a PS3?

If 640x480 were your preferred screen resolution I might believe you... I had nvidia 8800gt 3 years ago (hi-end card then) and achieved like 2-3 fps in the "Paradise Lost" level on high settings (AA turned off completely) in 1920x1200.
1) there are more xbox than PS3 owners in UK
2) FPS is the preferred genre on xbox
3) xbox owners have only a few other games to buy/play while there's already been several PS3 exclusives this year - Heavy Rain, WKC, Yakuza 3, superior FFXIII, GoW3, MLB the Show, MAG...
Although I have a PS3 I've been waiting months to play AC2 in 1920x1200@60fps with better textures and faster loading times so I can wait a few hours or days until the servers work again. I love PS3 and its exclusives but play all multiplayer games on my PC.
