PS brand is global and is for every type of gamer with different economic and social background. While most core gamers in developed countries will move to the ps4. Alot of casuals and most gamers in developing countries will still be supported by Sony with the ps3. This has been the reason why PS in the global gaming brand as is.

They didn't show it because the final casing is not final yet. They have until Nov to launch the dam thing. There is no need to rush the final console shape yet.
To gamers yes. Casuals no. Most of us gamers knew exactly what you are talking about. Other people that just heard about Sony announcing the PS4 on the day expected to see the actual console.

Had the PS3 since 2007. not once i used a CD in it. If i want music on it i just plug my external HD and access my 80,000 music collection.
Not a big deal for me at all and most PS fans. It's obviously big to x360 fans that will never buy a PS console though as it seems.

Sony's strategy every gen is to release new IP's to freshen and broaden their gaming audience.
Popular squeals they release for fan service and known ip's that will push console sales and software business.
This is why after 3 gens Sony own so many IP's that they don't know what to do with them in subsequent generation.
Remember Syphon Filter, Legend of Dagroon and Colony Wars from PS1?. There are so many.
What bugs me is the negative reaction when the casing was not shown.
Leading up to the 20th event. What we gamers wanted to know was
1. The PS4 console specs and functionality.
2. The Games that will be announced and how they will look.
3. Launch window.
