Aion is great, and the pvp is so fun, but trying to find the rifts can be so damn annoying.
Blizzard, for the most part has the engine working WoW maxed out. Aside from a few tweaks that can be done there isn't much to do.
To do what you're saying(to follow other mmos lead) Blizz would need a new engine. Going back to the controversial issue of making the game look different than the player base is use to. Running the risk of pissing off a lot of people. Again, more so than what is getting mad at these "aweful" graphics.

I don't think Star Wars will affect WoW much. At first maybe, but in the end you're always going to have the fantasy mmo group and the scifi mmo group. Swords & shields vs lasers & space ships. They'll never really compete with each other. Each has it's own following.

As long as there's an mmo that interests me and that I enjoy, I'll never leave. Meh, make it so the time stamp info is bound to your account login. So, the only way to check a characters play time is to log in via the Armory. Now, if you share your info, or if you've been hacked others can check your info. But that comes back to account security.
