This can be interpreted differently from two points of views: one from the richer and one from the poorer.
Example:
For $300 (half the price of the original), I don't care what it looks like. For $300 ($50 than the Wii, $100 than the Xbox Arcade), I don't care what it looks like.

Edit: Honestly, I'd rather have Sony spend money on parts and make money through games rather than have a company make it as cheap as possible only have it to 1. scratch my discs 2. RRoD and/or 3. E-74. Sometimes you get what you pay for. In Microsoft's eyes, that's not the case.
Even they foresaw the future with Sony's price cut. The 360 is meaningless, and they know it just as much as aanyone else.
