you should be able to play with design of the blades, maybe the layout of menu's/sub-menus, backgrounds, colours, logos etc etc

i cant ever see M$ allowing you to create your own, unless its very basic, maybe allowing background pics on each blade or something. they seem very negative towards the idea of allowing people to mess around with their console to much.
EDIT: good idea man, id love to see more variaty in the visualizations department, i to use my ps3 for music (same reasons as you listed). Even though i have a very nice quality CD player, admittidly a few years old now but it was the Nuts but...
just google "making ps3 themes" or something, all the software is easily avaliable for free.
As far as i know, yes you can import pretty much an image you like as long as the playstation can read that file type, and if it cant just save it as another file type, easy! hope that helped.
sony dont appear quite a greedy as M$. They also release all the software needed to create your own theme (FREE of course) so if sony ever started charging for them, someone would make an exact copy and stick it on the net (infact generally i found some user generated ones online are already better than an offical offerings).

it does become a little over crowded on most maps. i personally prefer around 20 players, anymore than that and it just gets a little hectic!

this, in-game XMB etc will all come with Home. Makes home seem a bigger deal that way.
