Well lets be honest Microsoft isn't the only game related company to ever be in that situation.
Imagine for a second you never heard or saw any marketing for the game whatsoever and you played it, you would be free to draw your own conclusions about not only the voices you're hearing but about everything going on in the game and for me personally I probably wouldn't go straight to mental illness.
