Might be because the new series has a lot more females in different roles in both the first order and the rebels.
Although it is a bit odd since all the trooper lines in the original trilogy were voiced by men. And the empire had no females in any position showed by the movies.
It is a bit of a continuity error, I could see the rebels having female troops, the imperials not so much.
At least till Disney threw out the extended universe and rew...

You could put a big purple dinosaur as the main character and most games would not change. (well maybe the combat would)

I would rather have better characters regardless of if they are male or female.
The only way your getting female enemies is if they are either grotesque monsters or zombies in most western games.

So far every rpg I have played as a male or female character has been only cosmetic or text changes at best, when switching the genders.

The mistake your making is assuming they actually care the slightest about females characters in gaming, or gaming at all.
I would be surprised if anyone of them could name a female main character from previous generations that is not samus aran or using google.

Yeah you have a skin change, a higher pitched voice and maybe npc's will address your character with female pro nouns or a woman's name.

Pretty sure the female protagonist is butchering enemies almost exactly the same as a male protagonist.

I wouldn't have a problem if they throw the disc drives out, it is a old technology that is more hassle than its worth.(heat/failure prone)
But they still need a medium for the people that want a physical product, I hope they shift to a flash memory based cartridge.
