Not as if those "unique" characters had any importance. They were just taken from previous game to just be there. The story was trash. If they didn't save the bulk of the story for the last chapter and actually did it how BBS did then we'd have answers.

it really isn't the perfect rpg. it's a great game but the combat is bad and story could have been a bit better. Signs were blah and skills were blah as well.

I miss Valkyrie Profile; honestly what lead to the downfall of jrpgs was budget and 3d environments. They started to cut corners and visuals never really caught up unless it was a high budget. Japanese developers rarely instill enough budget into a game to make it great, even if the core is good. that's why the handhelds jrpgs were the last few good ones aside from some AAA ones.
I think ps2 was the limit of jrpgs. Ps3 era it trailed off.

The Disney aspects of the game is actually what ruins it. All Disney levels just feel like filler and have little point but to general recap the films they come from.
It shines best when using those characters to further plot so we see how those characters would interact or react to new situations. Big hero 6 world did this and most of kh2 worlds did this.
