yes but start off with Zero. It's the better game.
if it's any consolation Yakuza 6 starts with a freaking ginormous flashback intro that kinda details everything you need to know from previous entries in order to get into the new game with (a little bit of) ease.
and most references and throwbacks, weirdly enough, are to Yakuza 1 and 2 (the ones getting PS4 remakes), not so much to 3, 4 and 5
