Its true though that alot of people bought the ps3 only for the "familiar name" ; proof = they only got multiplatform games on the ps3 (COD 4 , Assasins creed , FIFA etc.)hence the poor sales for ps3 exclusives (not all but most of them)
Why pay more to play the same games that in most cases run a bit smoother on the other console ?
MSFT did a bad job marketing the xbox brand in Europe especially in it...
ps3 gamers always get the short end of the stick , first its the multiplat games (Rainbow six added to the list) and now its the online stuff.
Anyways I think this makes sense since xbox is more about online than the ps3.

90% of xbox owners had a PS2 as well as the xbox.
Alot of xbox owners even had a PS2 before getting and xbox.
I got my xbox 3 years after getting my ps2. Most of the xbox owners I know had a ps2 as well so saying people arnet upgrading to ps3 because the ps2 is still there is nonsense.
When the wii came out the Gamecube was still available and games were still coming out (zelda for instance) but they didnt hesitate to upgrade.

XBOX1 = 25 million sold
xbox 360 = 10 million in first year
PS2 = 120 million
PS3 = 10 million in first year
