It isn't smart. A 3DS successor is due by next year some time. Enough remodels of 3DS already. Plus, it will be long enough for Wii U to have been out by 2016 for a successor so they should release NX by holiday 2016. That would be about 4 years, some consoles have had a lifespan of that amount, plus it can hang around lingering like 360 & PS3 have been so users get additional support. That's all reasonable.

Indies are doing what they can to innovate but big boys are playing it safe and even avoiding their own used-to-be huge franchise favorites like Mega Man. Sad state of affairs. Let's see some innovations. At least hoo up with indies and have them develop your old franchises and churn out your own new AAAs.

Wow, Nintendo is finally moving up. Hopefully Friend Codes are gone by time NX hits the market. Nintendo is slow to adapt but the story of the tortoise and the hair comes to mind. NX's successor will rule lol.
