Microsoft didn't wanted cross play when they were on top on the USA. The only reason they want it now is because of what you explain on your comment. This is a business and there is a reason why banks doesn't share their commercial wallets with their competitors.
Microsoft will obviously take advantage of this. It would be foolish of Nintendo and Sony to accept it.

It is not the PS4 Pro who it needs to outsell. PS4 Pro is just an optional variant. It is the PS4 overall who is ruling this generation.
