If you're able to play PS2 downloaded over the PSN, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to play your old PS2 disc as well. Just saying.

Obviously your so called fanboys are FinalFantasy-Fans first and foremost. Basicly they want a fully realized game without compromises and that clearly cannot be done while going multiplatform. Nobody complained when a FF title was release exlusive for the Nintendo.
It might just happen to be that these FF-fans came appriciate the PS.
