in what way cant it?
People have been brainwashed to believe a new version has to replace the old version for it to get better. I mean that's the way its always been done right?
But the truth is that the current source engine is already more like Source 4 than Source 1 or 2. So little of the original is left.
That's the benefit of modular design. If everything is a module then you simply create an updated module and drop it in with...
See I used to think it was something like that. But then Id Software's Rage got released with even worse bugs... and Bethesda was only publisher for it.
Now I'm thinking its more like a curse.
you know... unless Microsoft completely screws it up (which, honestly, doesn't happen often... despite what you may have heard)... the app store they will be including in Windows 8 is going to make a lot of these services obsolete for the average gamer. Mainly the ones that don't care about voice chat or instant messaging or gaming news but also for those that get such features elsewhere.
I'm sure a few will survive... mostly by adding features to their services ...
meh... consoles need an update... I wont deny that. But not by much. Gaming graphics in general is nearing a point where there is no "better." Where reality is having a hard time living up to the games these days... instead of the other way around.
I've been playing games a long time. I've never been a fan of graphics as a selling point for games, not since I was 12... but one more good leap in console technology would bring them into the realm of "...
I *really* hated FF 13. I've been playing FF games since the SNES... starting with FF4. I played all of them except X-2. And yet... FF13 was the most boring game I have ever played... and the worst FF by extension.
All I did in FF13 was walk down a corridor (one that occasional changed colors and shapes of its walls) and put a brick on the action button any time a battle came up.
I even started skipping the cutscenes.... and I *live* for the cutscenes in...
that was my thought too... who the hell? Regardless, I reeeally don't think that would be a good idea.
If they want to make a game in the diablo universe that seriously deviates from the main formula then make a spin off title... that's a good way to make money (Dirge of Cerberous, FF Tactics, etc) just don't make it part of the main series (FF13) or you risk alienating your fanbase.
oh and don't forget the fun argument that comes up with each Windows release about how they didn't change anything. If these people are to be believed Windows hasn't changed since 1995.
What these people don't understand is that Windows is an OS. Its job is to make it easier for programs to talk to the hardware. That's a decidedly "behind the scenes" job. A job that you wouldn't notice if it changed the way it was done.

lol went back and read more... and found this gem...
FTA: "One of the reasons why consoles do so well, is that there is a single, powerful entity marketing the platform as a whole. Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft each back their platforms with huge marketing budgets and use every major game release as an excuse to sell not only that game but also their platform as the best device to play it on."
DO.
NOT.
WANT!
Keep that...
oh yay! Another Microsoft hate article. God these are getting so old.
First... disclaimer: I use Linux heavily. I want to buy a mac to play around with it. I am not a windows fanboy and if that's the best counter argument for what I'm about to say that you can come up with then I feel sorry for you.
FTA: "Vista was a truly lousy OS but if you wanted the latest graphics, you needed to ‘upgrade’ to it whether you wanted to or not."
...
the point... which it seems is being missed... is that no one really wants these games to be realistic at all. They want to kill shit. They want to blow shit up. That's what these games are for and that's what they do. Who cares about the rest?
And the argument that it would add more morality to the games is even less intelligent. Morality is a multilayered and exceptional complex subject filled with nuances and tiny-but-important details. Most people would rath...
yeh... I stopped reading after that line. It was clear this was a fanboy article from the moment I saw the title... but I thought he might make a good point or two any way.
lol... wrong! With him spewing bullshit like that... if he did make a point I'm pretty sure it would be based on a delusion. So yeh...
And Adva has the right of it... buy a bargain basement computer and slap a $180 video card in it and it will play battlefield 3 with max settings no ...
People keep talking about saying how little details like civilians would help make the world more realistic.
So you want realistic eh? Lets have lots of endless patrols then. Like 50 of them... where nothing at all happens... between every actual fight. And then... lets have one near the end where you're on patrol and get ambushed by a superior force and every one dies except you... you just lose a leg... and your ability to do more than shit your pants and hide under ...
As to WW2... the civilians weren't on the front lines... except when the front line came to them... then they were all over the place.
If the town or village was being shelled they would hide in their basements... but if there were troups approaching the city as another group of troups retreated some would try to flee the city in the confusion.
But that wasn't ever shown in the ww2 footage because... if you will remember... the footage was being used ...
Oh god... I could rant on this topic for hours.
I've played them all to be honest. I've had an emo/crazy (malkavian) vampire character in Vampire The Requiem. I've had my share of elves in Dungeons and Dragons. I've got enough magic cards to open a magic shop tomorrow (im not even exaggerating). I've played every system since the Atari 2600 and own all but a few of them. RPG, FPS, MUD, MMO, RTS, Sim, God-Sim, Platformer, Puzzle, you name it... I've t...
I perfectly agree that the figurine is an awful rendition and most certainly does not remind me of Liara at all. The face is the worst part... any subtle features that might have been Liara's are gone. And her body is almost as bad... that is definitely not her's. I'm quite sure if she were real and saw that would would be rather annoyed. Then again I've never thought of the word "strong" describing Liara. She became cold and harsh in ME2... but I still do not t...
for #10: what do you expect? The entire gta series is aimed squarely at the most immature male members of a subculture viewed as already overflowing with intolerably immature males.
Really? Useless women in a game aimed at that demographic? No way! /sarcam
Say what you will about the gta games themselves... the fact that most people play them just to wreak havoc without suffering consequences speaks volumes about its fans.
and for #5: I q...
Dude... put the crack pipe away. You've had enough.
Most of the problems games have now days that aren't a result of the games themselves being buggy is a result of the DRM that is installed with them. The same DRM that *isn't* installed with the Steam version... thus reducing the buggyness in the steam version. This is the main reason I always get the steam version.
And I've never had a single bug with Steam itself... I've had a few wi...
takes away competitiveness?
I *really* don't follow how you came to that conclusion. If anything this would bring competitiveness back to the industry.
You do understand that the reason this hasn't happened yet (and likely never will) is that if every one could buy the latest multiplatform game and play it online with their friends regardless of platform then there would be no incentive for people who prefer PS3 to buy XBox 360, right? It also would...
You're right, most of the work load has been moved from the CPU to the GPU.
I tell people to make sure they have sufficient ram and at least a $180 video card and they should be set for at least 3 years.
In fact my 4 years old (almost 5 now) Core 2 Duo 2.1GHz with 2 Gigs of DDR2 ram plays Crysis 2, DNF, and FEAR3 on max settings at 720p (one of them at 1080p... I just cant remember which one).
And all I did was slap a new $180 video card ...
my computer is 4 years old, has a core 2 duo (1.8ghz) and ddr2 ram... the only thing upgraded about it is that its got a Radeon HD 5850 video card
And i am running the game on max settings, 1080p, self shadows for rocks and trees turned on. Just did the siege of whiterun... not a single visible hickup.
If you cant run this game without problems then your computer is ether ancient or there is something wrong with it. Or your trying to play a game on an integr...
