Laughable, you can't just do some random, limited study and try to pass it on and there are a lot of games that appeal to women, idie games, I know alot of chicks that love Skyrim, CoD, Elena in Uncharted (and Chloe). Again I question the strength of this article, primarily because it has virtually none.
Arkham City is fairly open world, to me it's way more tight and well put together if you want an open-world game to be GOTY it would be that. Personally, it's about the level of richness a game brings to the table, not necessarily about innovation as much as it is about simple enjoyability and knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the control system.
