comparing socom 4 to ANY other online shooter clearly paints a below average game, not just comparing it to older socoms

true, but the guns, physics, animations, lack of modes and maps all were below average. I can take a visual hit for all that, but everything else can't suck...
if Zipper didn't half ass MAG or call a hybrid of call of duty, ghost recon, mag and whatever else they copied, Socom 4, they might be in better shape.
All they had to do was perfect Confrontation. More maps, more guns, more customization, more player customization, a full featured single player, not the insult that was in Socom 4, and online co-op.
Confrontation still looks amazing, keep the core part of the game in tact and just add to it.

gta iv was different, but I think this change was actually for the better. GTA V should perfect what GTA IV wanted to be. GTA on ps2 was great, but there were a lot of empty aspects to the game.
It's sad it has finally happened. Zipper has no one to blame but themselves. They did great bringing Socom 1 to us. They did great by making Socom 2 even better, minus all the glitches.
They did solid with Socom 3 and did a little worse with CA, although it was still fun, they continued in the wrong direction.

in rush, there is no hike to the action, it's all right there, but expands as you progress
in conquest, you spawn near a point, close enough to get it and hold it down or rush to the next. there'll be less action intiially, but once both teams meet up it's constant choke points

Look at the playstation store where they sell marvel vs capcom and street fighter costumes. You can see all the people who reviewed their purchases. Now figure the few thousand that just reviewed the costumes at $5 a pack, just imagine how many people actually bought it and didn't review it.
