A similar example is mortal kombat, the old games were dark but vibrant, in an effort to darken the series more colors were neglected and more shadows and dark tones were added. With ff7 it’s the same (cloud wore purple and now it’s black, Midgar had awesome colors now it’s grey)

That's how the worldwide audience sees it. American media is really good at selling whatever, it's why Xbox marketing is a bit nauseating at times, they capitalize on forcing certain catch phrases on its watchers (like we do x "and that's a good thing" and sometimes fake hype (as seen in e3 multiple times).
