The same thing happened to me. It's not the firmware that caused the malfunction. It is very unfortunate,but it seems we are in those 1-2% unlucky individuals.
Since mine was a Japan launch import,I was not able to replace it and I decided to buy a new 80 gb(previously had the 60gb). It has been working like a charm. If you wish to replace the part by yourself,it would cst you around $150,but it is risky.
