You and your N4G buddies clearly have no factual evidence to state that the margins are so low on what is essentially a software sale. Most major corporations such as IBM and Microsoft can see 80% gross margins on software sales at retail. I would think that it is very safe to say that Sony (and Microsoft on their games) see easily $40 on a $60 game and maybe even more considering the piece that retailers get is razor thin (probably $5 or less on new games). At that rate only 1.5 million c...
I will have to vehemently disagree with your synopsis. Sony will not be closing its gaming division at all. A study of their financial information clearly shows it is one of their best performers and tied to a market that has shown and still shows significant growth potential. Many companies integrate like operations because it makes operational excellence a key strategy. The problem is that many of them do it during a financial crisis because they are forced to not when times are good wh...
Have any of you checked out this analyst company. They have 5 people on the research team and this Mike Hickey guy is their only analyst covering entertainment software. The company's primary focus is in telecommunications. Basically, they are a boutique shop that clearly is in this space because they think it might be benficial. However, considering their size, lack of experience in consumer electronics, and clear lack of understanding of the PS3 (Bluray less PS3???) I won't be looking f...
Why is anyone really surprised by this. The PS3 has the lowest market share of the major consoles. Here are the US sales to date for all major consoles (this gen and last gen):
PS2 50M
PS3 8M
XBox 16M
360 16M
GC 13M
Wii 21M
So I would expect when you ask the question which console do you play that the PS3 would be low. It hasn't even beaten GC sales in the US yet. So not many people own one so they can't be playing it....
Wasn't Huxley cancelled? A lot of the gaming press I read/hear makes it sound like this game is vaporware. Do you have some information you would like to share to increase confidence of a 2009 release?
How did you fell sorry? Did it hurt? Did you fall on your 360 and then say sorry? I don't get your point...thread doesn't say AAA it says quality.
I guess by your logic Fable 2 is a flop? 89 on both Metacritic and Gamerankings.
First off I will state that I love my PS3. I love the movies I have and the games I play and the PS3 has the franchises I love. I didn't buy a PS3 because of HOME but when I heard about it I thought it was a cool feature and was willing to see what became of it. Who knows maybe it could change the way we game. Now, this thing has gone back and forth....coming in 2007.....coming in 2008.....closed beta extensions....download the theme and we might invite you....purchase QORE and you get in...
Did you guys read the last paragraph or two where its says Shane Kim said it is too early to call the console war in favour of Nintendo and that the winner would be the first to hit 100m consoles? After the article states that MS is expecting to sell 75m 360's this gen. At 22m consoles now and current sales trends they would need 5 more years to hit that number. Could happen sooner with price drops but the arcade is already cheap. Does anyone think that MS can hit that number? I was thin...
I am more of a Sony fan than MS (I like both however and when the Pro gets at $199 I am buying one - already got some 360 games though) but this doesn't sound right. This should not tax the system anymore than the current dashboard. The only reason for problems will be software related which has nothing to do with the RRoD. I think it is safe to assume that some systems will die after the update but that won't be RRoD related. In fact, if you think about the new game install functionality...
Glad to see you corrected yourself on GTA IV. But I still think you are worng on the long shot. If I remember correctly it sold about 3.5M on day 1 and 6.5M for the first week. 1.8M difference is pretty big if you ask me. Regardless of that you are right in that only a few games can turn in a performance like this so fast. I mean MGS4 (game I love) just reported 4.33m in total sales in 5 months. Fallout beat that in 1 week.
I am happy for Bethesda though and am looking fo...
Lots of games are losing their exclusivity simply because Sony is not as dominant as last generation. Only reason for a 3rd party PS3 exclusive now is if the dev wants to take advantage of the architecture.
Having said that I notice how many people talk about games coming to the 360 but how about Saints Row 2? That was a 360 exclusive that they have lost? Pretty big one if you ask me. I mean if you are going to throw Tekken in then we should make note that the 360 is losing...
I just wanted to point out to everyone in the Sony and MS camps that Metacritic is not as good a measure of game quality as you might think.
I looked at the Fifa 09 scores and some of the lower scores attributed to the PS3 are not listed for the X360 version. For instance, Metacritic has an 85 from Gamespot for the PS3 version but nothing from them for the 360 version. Go to gamespot's website and guess what, there is a 360 review as well and it got an 85. Why isn't it inclu...
Has anyone thought that it is not prudent to comment on price drops before they happen. Look at the 360 sales when the 360 price drop was leaked. They dropped significantly because people waited. If I were Sony and were thinking about a price drop I wouldn't tell anyone because sales would dry up. I am sure that Sony is talking about a price drop but will only release it if PS3 sales performance drops. I mean they need to be prepared for that in case the tide completely turns in MS favou...
I agree with your list except for Cliffy B. Gears is a great game but he does not belong in that list of names you mentioned yet. If you put his name there then you have to throw Jaffe and some others in the mix and then the list gets too long and subsequently meaningless.
Oh....and that Civ guy is Sid Meier if I remember correctly.
I don't know how anybody doesn't think that this holiday season will not be interesting. MS will sell many more consoles which may prompt competitive moves from their competitors. Cheaper consoles is great considering I only own a PS2 and PS3 right now. Almost bought a 360 today because there is a great offer at Future Shop in Canada. On top of the price drop you get two games for free with any purchase of a 360. The games are Gears and some other game I am not interested in for $19.99. ...
I haven't tried this yet but I am going to but here is the info you requested....don't know if it works.
Share your bought downloads!!!!
You can download anything you've bought from the store to five PlayStation 3s. This is useful if you've got more than one PS3 (of course) and also if you've wiped your hard-drive and don't fancy paying for the same download twice. However, you can also choose to share your download with your mates. The PlayStation Store logs how many t...
Zerodin you are right. DD has been talked about for a long time. In fact I was working in the industry 10 years ago when MS, Cisco, Nortel, Lucent, Sun Microsystems and others promised the abilily to download thousands of streaming videos at the same time. In fact, I worked on equipment that was capable of these insame download speeds. This was the future and you better see it coming (in 98). Problem was that these systems (mixture of routers and servers) cost in excess of $10million and...
bubbles for you....
I used to build internet servers and routers (the million $ plus variety) and know a few things about fibreoptic requirements. 10 years ago everybody was laying fibre as the tech bubble was at full speed. After the bubble burst in 2000-2001 a lot of these companies went bankrupt and nobody picked up the torch because there was tonnes of capacity.
Fast forward to 2008 and the capacity is being filled up. That is why there are now monthly dow...
This is a purely selfish comment but I am glad they are dropping the price. I own neither MS or Sony or Ninty stock so as long as they are reasonably profitable I don't care how much money they lose or gain. I have a PS2/PS3 right now (still going through my PS2 backlog) and am looking to add a 360 and Wii eventually but its hard for me to justify spending that much money for a console to collect dust (I have limited playing time) so as the price drops come I get happier because I will even...
No I don't think they take home more than 20 pounds which would put it at 2/3 of retail price (based on 30 pounds). But that is exactly my point so thanks for proving it. 2/3 of retail price of $60 is $40 which is much higher than the $20-$25 you are basing your 2-2.5 million sales figure on. Just to complete the analysis in the US taxes are added onto the retail price so a $60 price tag does not include taxes like in the UK which based on your analysis would make the $40 amount I assumed ...
