EQ, FFXI, SWG, those were the big 3 imo by the time WoW showed up. All 3 were fantastic and will never be replicated.
I agree with the time commitment. No way I could personally do it now....simpler times....
As far as entry points, FF1-9 specifically have become "you had to of been there" for this young generation. Most arent going to play those games now and get the same experiences we got, especially the younger crowd, and it kind of fucking sucks. These were the best games because they forced you to use your imagination for world building, at the time of release atleast, bc of lack of voice acting and the prerendering (7-9)...the way the games were designed bc that's all the tech...
The sole problem with the Xbox is leadership. Whoever is in charge needs to be fired and this goes all the way up to Phil who I think has done good for Xbox. There's absolutely 0 accountability for their studios and the structure of Xbox game releases. It's a self inflicted fucking mess...

This is exactly how I feel about the single player FF games post XI. X was definitely where the changes started happening. It was more linear and then added voice acting. FF1-9 you would unintentionally use your imagination to recreate the worlds in your head, bc of the graphics, lack of voice acting, and the way the world map was. It was like reading a book. Post XI and it started to become a "Square Enix movie". That's the difference between og FF7 and the remake.
