If I remember correctly Kojima and Toro started planning the game in 2012 already or 2013 and I think TLOU released in 2013. Which is why he said "games that came after" and included TLOU in it.

It would have been the perfect psychological horror game and SH would be amazing again... PT alone is one of the scariest games I've ever played, if not the scariest. And it was only a small taste of what they could show us :(.

Some of the games you guys mention are done by developers experienced with open world design. This was Kojima's first of this scale and Rockstar etc maybe have a bigger team working on the games, which also result in faster release.
Kojima mention in the TPP Guide, that they removed Battle Gear from being playable, because it was too powerful. Made the gameplay unbalanced.

It's as you said, everybody has their taste. Many think MGS3 is one of the best games ever made and it still remains my top MGS game storywise.
But not every reviewer liked it for reasons, the gameplay etc. Not everyone like MGSV either, but people review games differently. Most fans of the series might think it's disappointing, but that doesn't mean everyone hate it. Maybe after few years fans who hate TPP view it in other way.
